For some the idea of sports arbitrage is too tempting to ignore: risk-free bets, always in the profit, no sitting for hours, worrying whether your selection is going to let you down. Others point out the difficulties of generating an income with this form of sports betting: multiple bookmaker accounts which have to be well-managed, the need to be at your computer at the right time otherwise you might miss out on an "arb", and the relatively small profits. How to Make Money by Arbitraging in Baseball, Basketball and Tennis

Sports arbitraging occurs when two different bookmakers offering prices on an event with only two possible outcomes and there is enough of a difference in their prices such that you can back both outcomes and make a profit whoever wins. It's very similar to trading. The difference is that for arbitrage you are betting almost simultaneously with two books offering different prices. Trading is making a profit by backing both outcomes at different times (normally in-running). Arbitraging is sometimes described as risk-free betting, this is true in theory, but not in practice, so carefully read my advice on risk from arbitraging on my website prior to embarking on this pastime.

To succeed at arbitraging, you need to have:

1. An account with at least 5 and preferably 10 on-line bookmakers (books for short)

2. A reliable computer with broadband internet connection

3. The ability to work quickly with the excel spreadsheet to calculate stakes, and then place bets on two different sites, almost simultaneously. You will definitely need to use some software to calculate your stakes for you. My free spreadsheet does the job nicely, there's examples of the sums on my website, and you can request a free copy on too.

4. Good money management - the ability to keep track of all your bets, and move money quickly from one account to another. A Moneybookers account is the best way to do this.

Virtual Sports Betting

Professional sports bettors arrange their work days around their betting activities. They spend an hour or five on picking their selections (and justifying it to themselves), and then they place their bets.

But what do to if you're still stuck in a day job, with your (hopefully) serious sports betting activities limited to lunchtime and perhaps a few hours after dinner? The answer, as many people have discovered, is betting on virtual sports.

Many reputable online bookmakers offer virtual sports alongside their menu of regular (and real) sport events. The usual fare include virtual horse races, virtual greyhound races, and perhaps the most popular virtual action, soccer/football.

I have personally looked at virtual horse racing at Bet365. The graphics and speeds were good enough, but seeing that we're not in it for the thrill, what about the profit potential? Difficult to say. I paper tested a few races, lost a few, won a few, and ended up with a small profit (using the Smart Bet Wizard software). I didn't really use any fancy system (as I would with real horse races); all I did was back favorites higher than evens. (On the greyhounds I can't really comment, as I have yet to get to grips with actual greyhound races.)

The area where I have done some serious testing, is on virtual football (or soccer). I got hold of a copy of Frank Belanger's Virtual Sports Cash. (Frank Belanger is also the author of the reputable Bookie Buster sports betting manual, so I already knew he knows his stuff.) The Virtual Sports Cash manual is very comprehensive, taking you through the whole business of betting on virtual football games, including which bookmakers to use, why you should have more than one account, and of course, a number of actual systems to use with virtual football (the manual has recently been updated with three new systems).

The advantage of virtual football is clear from the start. In order for the bookmakers to keep punters coming back, the results have to be realistic. Of course Liverpool or Manchester United suffer the occasional defeat at the hands (or feet) of Bolton Wanderers or Birmingham City, but at the end of the season the usual suspects can be expected at the top of the league table: Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal.

The other BIG advantage of virtual football is that a complete week of play lasts only 90 seconds, and an entire season is played out within ONE hour! That means you can bet on football every day of the year, 24 hours a day (technically speaking). Yet another advantage is that you don't need a huge bankroll to start off with, seeing that you can build it up over a few hours with dozens of bets, and you don't need to analyze stats for hours (not time for it, anyways, as each week's games play out in 90 seconds).

So, if your day job is still in the way of getting ahead in your sports betting projects, I suggest you give virtual football a try, and instead of fooling around, get the Virtual Sports Cash manual to guide you along the way.

How To Bet On NBA Teams That Have Given Up

Usually by this time of year, there are the teams at the bottom of the standings which have little to play for other than a better chance in the NBA Draft Lottery. This season it is the same. The teams at the bottom have proven to be bad for multiple reasons and as the season winds down, they are proving to be even more so. The Heat, Timberwolves, Grizzlies, Knicks, Bucks, Clippers and Sonics all come to mind. The information I saw recently had had this group of teams winning only around 25% of their games while being only a little better than 35% ATS over their last ten games as of mid-March. When you exclude those games played against each other, they drop to less than 30% ATS. How do you bet these teams?

Below are five rules in betting on these losing teams. While not applicable in all situations, the rules are a good starting point.

• Just don’t bet on them. But to some people this is like talking to a wall. That is why there are four other rules.

• Bet against them. Only Seattle had as many as five covers ATS in their last ten games. The competing teams covered the spread almost 70% of the time.

• Even a double digit spread is not enough. When these teams are underdogs by 10 or more points, it’s almost as if they have read the obit before the game is played. In these games, the favorite covered the spread almost 80% of the time. Only Seattle covered the spread more than half of the time. Once you take Seattle out of the mix the remaining teams failed to cover the spread almost 90% of the time. It takes real courage or some other quality, which I will not go into here, to go against those odds.

• East=West. Record ATS was just about the same against the East as it was the West. Do not assume that bad teams have an advantage against one division over the other.

• Home court meant little to these teams. With this group, it would have been very costly to bet for them because of a home court advantage. The data showed that in actuality, they were slightly better ATS on the road than at home. I emphasize the slightly. When you think about this, it does make some sense as empty seats at home do not cheer very loudly.

In reality after reading all of these rules, if you have any question as to how to proceed, re-read the first rule and leave it at that.

Sports Betting: Why Winners Use Proven Sports Betting Systems

We have all seen the hype for proven betting systems. Do they work or is it just hype? There are a lot of systems out there and some work very well and some are just hype. When looking for a proven system for sports betting is definitely in the realm of buyer beware.

The most famous of all systems is The Martingale. This is the system when you keep doubling your bets if you lose until you win. This is the reason that Casinos and Bookies have table and bet limits. Although this system isn't one that we can use there are many variations of the Martingale and others.

Why do we need to use a proven system?

Let's take an example were a sports bettor has made 20 bets of $100. And after the 20 bets the bettor was sporting a winning percentage of 50%. In this example, using no proven system, this sports bettor is down $100.

There are two reasons to use a proven sports betting system.

1. To recover your juice on losses
2. To recoup a portion or all of your previous losses

I already covered why we need to recover our juice. If you have been around sports betting it's kind of a no brainer. But we need to recoup some if not all of our previous losses with the current play we are about to make. Using a proven system will help you do both.

In the example I used above with the sports better making 20 bets and being down $100, he/she was right 50% and wrong 50% of the time. Yet they were still down. There are proven systems out there that will allow you to be a winner even at a winning percentage as low as 33%.

That information alone is worth its weight in gold. Because it tells us that we can make do with some bad losing streaks and still be a winner in the end. Using a proven system is one of the four strategies all winning sports bettors use. When you use all four together no bookie can stop you.

Sports Betting: Why All The Winners Have A Well Laid Plan

This is the last of four strategies that all winning sports bettors use. They all set up plans and goals and do not ever deviate.

When I first started in sports betting my goals then were a lot different than they are today. Basically I didn't have any goals when I first started; I just made plays because it was fun. I also lost a lot of money because I chased losses. That wasn't very fun.

I think we have all been there were you start out Saturday morning with that good feeling of a long day of College Football and betting ahead of us. And by the 1:30 games we are already stressing about the losses and how can we get them back. Well we don't have to worry there is plenty of games left. By the end of the day we are loading up on the Hawaii game (which we would have NEVER bet) to get all of our losses back.

Over time that scenario will end up badly more times than it will be good. It is easy to get caught up in the emotion of sports betting. But we can't, we have to lay down a plan or goals and stick to them. Here's another scenario that I fell into when I first started as well. I would make my early bets on Saturday and most if not all came through. I would be riding high, felt untouchable. So I would up my bets and/or by the last game double down on that game. By the sports betting day's end I had nothing to show for my great start.

We can't fall into these scenarios and figure that we will be sports betting winners over time.

We need to set a goal and stick to it. If you want to make $50 or $5000 set up a plan to get there in a set time frame and stick to it. You don't plan to achieve you won't achieve.

The statistical methods described in this set of articles will help you to arrive at a better decision about the match, or matches, that you are betting on.

In this article we will be describing the well known Win Draw Loss method.

Here are the basic rules:

The Win, Draw, Loss method is very simple and takes into account the proportion of past wins, draws, and losses over a specified period of time. By calculating the number of wins, draws and losses for both the home and away sides and then combining them it is possible to produce a statistical probability of the possible outcome of the game.

Here is how a typical calculation is made:

1. For a specified period of time the number of wins, losses, and draws are counted for each side. This could be for a whole season or you may wish to have a rolling time period, say the last six months for example.

2. The percentage probabilities for home wins, draws, and away wins are then made. For example, the home win percentage is calculated as follows:

(( HW + AL) * 100) / total number of matches

Where,

HW = number of home wins by home team
AL = number of away losses by away team
Once you have a percentage probability for each outcome a decision can be made on the most likely outcome.

Let's look at a simple example of how you could apply this%u2026

First of all you would collect the data for a specified period of time and for each of the three possible outcomes, i.e.

HW = number of home wins for home team
HD = number of draws for home team
HL = number of home losses for home team
AW = number of away wins for away team
AD = number of draws for away team
AL = number of away losses for away team

TOTALGAMES = HW + HD + HL + AW + AD + AL

HOMEWIN = ((HW + AL)*100)/TOTALGAMES
DRAW = ((HD+AD)*100)/TOTALGAMES
AWAYWIN = ((HL + AW)*100)/TOTALGAMES

This gives you a percentage probability for each of the three possible outcomes.

Now let's extend this to provide 1, X, 2, 1X, and X2 predictions:

To do this we can employ a simple voting system, here is how it works:

First we set three thresholds:

DRAWTHRESHOLD = 35%
AWAYTHRESHOLD = 45%
HOMETHRESHOLD = 55%

Then we initialise our voting counts for each method:

DRAWP = 0
HOMEP = 0
AWAYP = 0

Now we compare each of the calculated probabilities against our thresholds to arrive at a vote count for each outcome:

This means we now have a total vote count for each of the three possible outcomes.

Next we can deduce our final 1, X, 2, 1X, and X2 predictions based on the voting as follows:

In this article we will be describing the well known Simple Sequence method. The Simple Sequence method is not just a single method, there are many ways of devising a simple sequence method, and you could probably devise one of your own. The way the Simple Sequence method is implemented in the Footyforecast 2.0 software and on the 1X2Monster website is to use a weighting factor on each of a series of games.

Here are the basic rules:

A number of matches are used to look back at from the forecast date. So let's say our team has the following results (most recent on the right hand side):

W D L L W

This would give them the following points:

3 + 1 + 0 + 0 + 3 = 7

Now to take into account current form each is given a weighting factor, so the oldest match is multiplied by 1 up to the most recent match being multiplied by 5. Of course this will vary depending upon the number of matches you use, but for this example it gives us the following:

3*1 + 1*2 + 0*3 + 0*4 + 3*5 = 20 points

Now let's say the away team playing against the team above have the following record:

W W D D D

They will have:

3*1 + 3*2 + 1*3 + 1*4 + 1*5 = 21 points.

The points difference HOME v AWAY = 20 - 21 = -1.

Now, depending how you classify this it could represent an away win, i.e. all matches below a points difference of 0 = away win, or it could be classed as a draw.

Let's look at a simple example:

For our example we will use the last ten games played for each team. That's the last ten home games for the home side, and the last ten away games for the away side. The match is between Middlesbrough and Bolton Wanderers in the English Premiership played on 20th Jan 2007.

Middlesbrough

This gives
0*1 + 0*2 + 3*3 + 3*4 + 3*5 + 1*6 + 0*7 + 1*8 + 3*9 + 3*10

This equals
0+0+9+12+15+6+0+8+27+30 = 107

Bolton

This gives
0*1 + 3*2 + 3*3 + 3*4 + 1*5 + 0*6 + 0*7 + 3*8 + 3*9 + 0*10

this equals
0+6+9+12+5+0+0+24+27+0 = 83

Therefore the difference is

107 - 83 = +24

This could be determined as a home win but depending on your chosen threshold levels could be classed as a draw.

Now it's your turn...

Of course you may choose to use different values to those shown above and by experimenting you may come up with better values to use. You may also choose to use all home and away games played by each team in your calculations instead of just home games for the home team and away games for the away team. You may choose to have different thresholds than those shown above. You may also find it beneficial to plot actual results against the Simple Sequence method predictions to see how many actual draws fall in the away win, draw, and home win prediction zones.

In this article we will be describing the well known Score Prediction method. The Score Prediction method uses a teams goal performances over a specified period of time in order to predict the score of the game concerned.

Here are the basic rules:

As an example of the Score Prediction method this is how Footyforecast and 1X2Monster handle this method. This is an example of a match and each teams respective goal count for the last five games:

home team 3-3 1-0 4-1 0-2 2-1
away team 0-1 2-2 0-3 6-0 1-3

We can work out some figures from this as follows:

home teams goals scored for = HGF = 3 + 1 + 4 + 0 + 2 = 10

away teams goals scored for = AGF = 1 + 2 + 3 + 0 + 3 = 9

home teams goals against = HGA = 3 + 0 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 7

away teams goals against = AGA = 0 + 2 + 0 + 6 + 1 = 9

Now we can work out points for each team based on the goals they have scored and the goals they have had scored against them as follows:

home goal points = HGP = HGF + AGA = 10 + 9 = 19

away goals points = AGP = HGA + AGF = 7 + 9 = 16

And now we can get a difference:

goal points difference = GPD = HGP - AGP = 19 - 16 = 3

Now we could classify this as follows:

GPD => +2 then home win,
GPD =< -2 then away win
GPD -2 then draw.

These parameters are obviously fairly arbitrary but experience should allow you to tune them more carefully.

Now we must use the GPD and one of three tables.

Since our match has generated a home win prediction then we must use the HOME WIN SCORE PREDICTION table to obtain our score prediction. To do this we need to calculate another parameter, that of home goal score points as follows:

HGSP = HGP + all goals scored by home team of 3 or more in a match + all goals against the away side of 3 or more.

therefore HGSP = 19 + 7 + 6 = 32

Now do the same for the away team:

AGSP = AGP + all goals scored by away team of 3 or more in a match + all goals against the home side of 3 or more.

therefore AGSP = 16 + 6 + 3 = 25

So, in the home win score prediction table we go to HOME > 30 which gives us 3 goals for the home team and go to AWAY > 17 giving us two goals for the away team therefore the result is predicted as a 3-2 home win.

Now it's your turn...

For Trifectas: play 1,2 with 1,2 with 1,2,3,4 or 1,2 with 1,2,3 with 1,2,3,4. Wheeling combinations depends primarily on how much you are willing to stake for each ticket.

For Pick-3s: Try one of these two methods. The first one is just to play the top 3 in each 3 races for a cost of $54. The second method involves picking a value horse plus a backup runner in one leg. Your tickets may look like thus:

Let's say you start with $2000 you know you can afford to lose and this is your designated bankroll. You should divide it into four equal parts. That would make four parts of $500. Then your betting unit should be no more than 5% of your total bankroll. I use and am a proponent of 1-2%. So that puts the betting unit at $20-40.

Your goal now is to take one $500 unit and double it using a good system and your betting unit of $20-40. Once it's doubled you add that to you total bankroll and you now have $2500. Now divide that into four parts and do it again.

But what if you lose the first $500? If that unit is gone then you take your remaining bankroll ($1500) and divide that now into four equal parts and repeat.

The whole idea is to protect you from huge losing slides, which we've all experienced. It protects you not only from a huge losing streak but keeps you on track for long term investment opportunities.

The first basis of a Staking Plan is that a separate betting fund or 'bank' is used from which to stake and to which the winnings are added. This means that bets are never placed randomly without being accounted for to the bank amount, and there is a certain amount of limitation of liability in managing the money in this way, rather than betting out of everyday funds. The concept of having a bank and protecting it is fundamental to Staking Plans and applies the first stage of protection.

The Staking Plan is applied to a system of selection, which may use any criteria to select the next bet. It is important to note that a Staking Plan will never select a next bet for the user; it will merely indicate the bet amount.

As a priority, the Betting System used must be assessed in terms of its relative success and also to estimate the worst-case scenario for a losing sequence, ie. the maximum number of consecutive or near-consecutive losses. This eventuality must be allowed for in selecting the bank start amount and in the type of staking plan used.

How to Rate a Betting System

A Betting System is rated on 'flat betting' or at 'level stakes', ie. its performance is tested when a consistent bet is placed every time and this allows comparison of systems. Furthermore, points can be applied when assessing a system's success. Points gained by a Betting System are then a factor of the bet amount and the amount of funds held, and can provide a common level for rating, not related to currency.

An example of the application of points to a system might be taking 1 point as 2 % of a bank. With the bank amount of 2 500, 1 point will be 50.

Note: Staking Plan calculations must allow for commission amounts which may be payable on wins if an exchange is used for betting.

The most common Betting System rating is its Strike Rate. This is a measure of the relative success of the system, ie. the percentage of wins out of total bets. The higher the average odds, the lower the strike rate can be. When multiplied by the average odds, a Performance Ratio is obtained for a Betting System.

For a Staking Plan to work, a Betting System must be either successful, ie. having an overall positive result, or marginal, ie. it does not substantially gain or lose money, with the bank balance remaining around zero. A Staking Plan cannot make a successful Betting System out of an unsuccessful one, though some Staking Plans will assist in making a marginal system profitable. This does not mean that the use of a marginal system should be encouraged. The more successful the Betting System, the better the Staking Plan will be able to assist in protection of the bank and in magnifying growth.

Benefits of Using a Staking Plan

Use of a Staking Plan can prevent many of the common mistakes in betting. A Staking Plan immediately gives discipline to staking. It establishes a bank amount and imposes rules to every bet made. This prevents betting due to emotional reactions, positive or negative. It records every activity to provide a means of checking and cross-referencing a system. Bets are limited to the amount stipulated by the Staking Plan, which prevents wild or impulse betting.

A Staking Plan is the key to winning by protecting the bank from the risk that it is exposed to by betting, and encourages slow but steady growth rather than a 'get rich quick' mentality.

Bookmakers want a bettor to chase losses with blind hope, often counting on luck, and this is what will happen without the use of a disciplined Staking Plan. The most dangerous time is often at the end of the day when it is tempting to try to recover all the day's losses in one action. A Staking Plan continues from day to day, so there is no 'last race' and this will not happen.

A Staking Plan brings about slow growth through planning and encourages serious betting and sustained profits. The rule of "don't ever bet more than you can afford to lose" is ensured by the use of a Staking Plan.

Types of Staking Plans

A Staking Plan relates the next bet amount to some aspect of the previous events, so a Staking Plan calculation might be related to the current bank amount or the odds offered. Alternatively, it can be calculated according to the relative success of previous bets or geared to recover lost amounts. The best Staking Plans are a combination of several of these methods.

A. Target Based or "Loss Recovery" Staking Plans

This type of Staking Plan involves setting an aim or target to be achieved. Once it has been reached, a new target is set. This means that bets are calculated towards the target amount over a period of time and the Staking Plan is designed to reach this amount regardless of results along the way. For a successful system this can mean steady growth of the bank as targets are set over time and profit is grown slowly.

Progressive staking plans follow this idea, but they must be used with caution, for example doubling up after a losing bet can quickly lead to large losses. Some 'Point Chasing' Staking Plans, which use a target based/loss recovery system, include the Martingale Staking Plan and the high risk Directors Staking Plan.

The danger with this type of system is that if bet amounts are designed to recover losses, the target increases with every loss and a long losing run may exhaust the bank.

B. Bank Based Staking Plans

These Staking Plans calculate the bet amount based on a percentage of the bank available for staking, ie. they run proportionally to bank amount. These are called Percentage or Bank Staking Plans and involve variable staking, sometimes for example as a fixed % of the bank. Examples include Rolling Bank and Square Root Staking Plans.

It must be noted that these methods do not take directly into account the performance of the system they are applied to, only indirectly, by means of the bank movements, though they are safer methods to use as the bet amounts are regulated by the selected bank percentage.

C. Increase Systems

These Staking Plans are directly related to wins and losses ie. to the Strike Rate of the Betting System to which they are applied. Examples include the Fibbonacci, Stepper/Master, Pocket and Percentage Profit Staking Plans.

The application of direct feedback means that these methods are the most responsive to the flow of events; however, this also means that they may not allow maximum benefit from a winning streak.

D. Combined Plans

There are many Staking Plans that combine variations of above plans, for example the Kelly Criteria Staking Plan uses a formula to calculate the next bet based on the strike rate and average odds for the system and then applies a bank percentage to obtain the bet amount. Winfactor Select Staking Plan uses a percentage of the bank according to the success of the system in a similar way.

What to look for in a Staking Plan

A good Staking Plan must recoup successfully after long losing runs whilst maintaining minimum exposure. Since every event presents a new situation, it should calculate a new next bet amount according to the revised bank position after each event.

When lay betting, it should be noted that a Laying Staking Plan must ensure that the bet amount is indirectly proportional to the odds value, ie. the higher the odds, the lower the bet value to a fixed risk amount according to points. Many Laying Staking Plans do not recalculate the bank amount after each event, losing profit potential.

Staking Plan software

Good Staking Plan software should allow easy input of results and give a quick, clear indication of the next bet amount. It may be useful to see the exact calculations of how this amount is obtained, but it is essential to be able to view information on the exact status ie. current bank balance and performance indicators for recent events. It must allow for the application of commissions where necessary.

Ideally, the Plan software should include the facility to test systems at flat betting. With an easy method of input of past results, it should provide as an output the necessary relevant parameters for system assessment and comparison, ie. the strike rate, performance ratio, etc. as well as a summary of the total amount that would have been bet and the return that would be achieved. This enables full 'paper testing' of systems.

Summary

Every race is a different equation so a bet should never be placed without knowing the outcome of the previous event and good Staking Plan software should quickly calculate and display the next bet amount.

Steering Clear Of Unbettable Horse Races

Three out of five horse races are unbettable and this doesn't matter whether favorites or long shots win them. The fact is: The best horse doesn't always win and the fastest horse doesn't always win. One of the reasons for this is plain: Races are filled by racing secretaries eager to fill cards, not to produce easily handicapped winners.

Although many unbettable situations can be readily ascertained, many can not. Some situations are plainly ridiculous; others just confusing. I advocate, that you train your eye to see how not to bet as much as when to and how to bet. If you can correctly spot unbettable situations, you will greatly improve your chances of winning.

When I speak of unbettable situations, I do not refer to rainy weather or muddy tracks. Nor do I refer to situations outside of the mechanical character of the race itself. By an unbettable situation, I mean that mechanical element in the race itself, which will cause confusion as to the proper horse to bet on, thus preventing intelligent wagering. The following is a sketch of hazards that I have found which will decrease your chances of picking winners, and which, if not painstakingly avoided, will insure losses and incorrect choices.

An unbettable situation can be created by oneself. One who constantly watches the odds board is looking for trouble. He is looking for a crutch to lean on. He begins to look for a "hint" from someone who knows something, or tries to discover if the public agrees with his selection, so as to be psychologically prepared to rush the mutual windows. I have heard many people say, "This is the horse that looks like a winner, but how can he win at this price?" or, "The smart boys are on the number three horse, how can I go with this one?"

Well, to put it bluntly, there are no smart boys. No one knows any more than you do! Wrong, you say? Stop to think for a minute. There are eight horses in a race, and the owners of at least five of them probably feel that their horse is ready and can win. So who, then, are the smart boys? One of the eight has to win and seven others have to lose, yet the fans think that there is always someone who knows something more than they do - and they are waiting to get the tip! Get off the cloud. Figure it out for yourself - your selection is as good as the racing commissioner's!

It seems to be psychologically easier to bet heavier on an odds-on choice than on a horse, which is three to one. You are consoled by the fact that the public likes him, the public handicappers like him, and you like him. But the horse doesn't know that he is being approbated in this manner! Remember statistics prove that John Q. Public and John Q. Public Handicapper are wrong 66 percent of the time. The favorites win on the average of one out of three races. How does it make sense to follow some one who is wrong two out of the times?

It is far better to develop your own independent handicapping ability and disregard the public, the public handicappers, and the odds boards. I am not suggesting wagering on 20 to one horses, nor am I suggesting playing favorites. Instead, I suggest a happy medium between disregarding the public choice and betting your own choices! If these two happen to coincide, there shouldn't be any need to be unhappy about it.

Sports and athletic activities in the middle ages of Europe were born from military training and combat skills.

During the European medieval period all things were usually solved either with the help of the Church, or with the help of force: so most landlords who wanted to survive had to develop their own armies and everyone benefited from constant military training. Nobles stimulated their subjects to train for war and even went as far as prohibiting other sorts of games so that people would only concentrate in becoming better warriors.

In this way, tournaments and jousts were born as the most popular sort of medieval sport, probably by imitation of Roman history but at least with the intention of not being so bloody: while knights died in fact during tournaments, that was not the result sought. All sorts of combat variants appear over time: on horse, on foot, one on one, teams and the meleé, which was something like a pillow battle but with armour and blunt weapons.

People developed sympathies for certain knights and teams, and fans even behaved tumultuously from time to time, just like in any modern stadium; and naturally, money began circulating in the form of prizes and bets. Eventually, money surpassed the original goal of these activities, and knights became professional athletes in some cases, looking for the hefty prizes paid, and the nice betting money that they could get out of the tournaments.

However, as the sport developed, kings and queens saw that they could make some nice tax money from them and hefty entry fees were placed. "Big Al" seems to be doing well, with Robert Dickson lagging a bit. I'm not currently adding the odds/payouts for each selection (I'll start doing that next week), but I can say that for Mr. Dickson: he tends to pick underdogs which pay out nicely on the days he does do well.

The Capper Tracker Project
